Busy New Year...
Posted on Jan 17, 2017 8:22 AM

Well, 17 days into the new year, and so far its been a busy one.

I have started to redo a part of the back yard where some scuppernong grapes were growing on a dilapidated trellis. After a severe cutting of the vines and clearing all the growth on the trellis, I was able to get in and remove the hog wire and rotted wood. I removed the post that supported it all, and will relocate the clusters of grape vines in another project. The open space will allow for planned 6' x 4' raised veggie beds. I still have a lot of roots and such to remove, but progress is steady. Once again, I failed to take any pictures of it all, but will get some this week to update this post. Or perhaps put in another one.

I also had a chance to add the three bags of Lilium bulbs that I scored at one of our local box stores.
Lily (Lilium 'Easy Samba')
Lily (Lilium 'Mapira')
Lily (Lilium 'Easy Dance')

Below are the recent ordered or won Daylily CVs

Fred Maning
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Lillian's Vapor Trail')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Lillian's Clockwork Orange')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Charcoal Eyes')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Silver Sides')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Wild Dreams')

In The Neighborhood
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Layers of Gold')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Siloam Double Classic')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Thing of Beauty')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Two to Tango')

Friday the DW and I also checked out a couple of green houses at a local building vendor. They are preassembled, plumed for irrigation and wired with ventilation fans etc...
They are a bit pricey, but well built with the frame assembled of 2" galvanized steel pipe. They have two models, approximately 10' x 12' and 12' x 18' if I correctly remember the dimensions.
Nice again, but still undecided if I want to fork out the green for year around green.

To be continued...

Merry Christmas, Years End and a New...
Posted on Dec 28, 2016 12:30 PM

A belated Merry Christmas to all whom may read this post.

I missed spending Christmas in GA with my mother this year, however we had celebrated on a mini vacation in TN at the beginning of the month.

It wasn't a hard decision to make, but my Darling Wife and I elected not to travel this year. You see, we had received word that my youngest son and his wife were coming home for a visit. My daughter w/BF in tow had also planned to spend a couple days with us. Now If my oldest son were able to make it in, it would be a full house. Anyways, being that we were going to be home with family coming in, we needed to do a little decorating to spruce up the place. Ok maybe not spruce, but some fir trimmings were used to make our home festive. The DW and I took a trip to the local box store, and scored some trimmings from the Christmas trees being sold. There was a huge scrap bin to be discarded and we were allowed to help ourselves. Now I love a good freebie, but we only took what we could use to allow others to benefit from a freebie. After loading up and making it back home, we needed the red from berries to add visual interest. So, I cut some Yaupon Holly from around our property to use.. Below are a few of the pictures,

With the exception to the 80°f weather, we enjoyed a wonderful Christmas. It would have only been better with the addition of absent family members and those who were called up this year.

As I come to the end of this post, it's so hard to believe that we are rapidly drawing to the years end. I sit here reflecting on many things. Some include all the many projects and tasks that I wanted to do, but set aside for later. Feeling a bit overwhelmed from the honey do list I've created for myself, I do remember the few things that I accomplished. But most of all, I reflect on how truly blessed that I am!

From my family to yours, I hope that you are blessed, and that you have a healthy and prosperous New Year!

First frost...
Posted on Nov 20, 2016 7:47 AM

Received our first 30 degree temperatures last night, and with it came the first lite frost of the season.
There is ice in the bird bath and I seem to have collected a few bumbles. The bumbles are frozen in time on the potted mum.

It seems my daughter has been hanging onto a birthday gift since August. Imagine my surprise to open the box to discover two Daylily's. Again, she's had these since August, and they've been kept in the box, in the baggies ever since. When I opened them this morning this is what I found,

They should be fine though. I can't believe they look as good as the do. For being out of ground so long.

Way behind...
Posted on Oct 29, 2016 8:51 AM

To those who visit here, hello!

It's been a little while since my last post. But since then I have rescued a horse. She is pretty much demanding most of my attention these days. Her name is Zara, is a TWH and stands 16.1 hands.

I have managed a few things around the house and added a few more daylilys to the new border bed. Below is the progress. Doesn't look like much now but after a extended summer and into fall, I'm anxious to see what this grows into.

I'll have to name the daylilys in another post. I have to find my list.

Speaking of progress, here are the seedlings that I started in Mid-August.

I'm after blooms next season! Wish me luck!

Update to new border bed...
Posted on Oct 4, 2016 6:50 PM

So after tilling and raking the new border bed about four times, I was ready to get started. I added top soil, garden soil with pine fines, mushroom compost, alfalfa pellets, pelletized lime, and milorganite to the bed and tilled it all in.
Here are a few pictures after planting.

Here is a list of Perennials planted in the bed along with about 12 daylily's,

Butterfly Bush (Buddleja davidii 'Nanho Blue')
Meadow Sage (Salvia nemorosa Lyrical™ Blues)
Black Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii 'Goldsturm')
Stonecrop (Hylotelephium 'Class Act')
Foxglove (Digitalis Foxlight™ Plum Gold)
Hollyhock (Alcea rosea Spring Celebrities™ White)
Garden Phlox (Phlox paniculata 'Laura')
Border Penstemon (Penstemon 'Cha Cha Cherry')
Bigflower Coreopsis (Coreopsis 'Early Sunrise')
Switch Grass (Panicum virgatum 'Heavy Metal')
Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster')

Daylily's

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Lillian's John Falck')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Moon River Ripples')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Spacecoast Sea Shells')

There is also one, unnamed seedling with a garden name of Johnny Parks. Johnny is a cousin that dabs a bit of pollen and this is one of his. Thumb of 2016-10-05/GaNinFl/7946f8

It is a cross of,
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Alabama Jubilee') X Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Hot Ember')
