@pod what if you slipped a small pot, with some soil in the bottom, under the branch and cover it up with more soil.? Then when it is well rooted, snip it from the mother branch. Smiling

That is worth a try. I am probably the one that suffers separation anxiety. I think I overwater as the roots are not fully developed.

Marilyn thank you for starting this thread on Rosemary. It is a wonderful plant, if for nothing other than its scent. I enjoy chatting about a particular plant and share experiences about it with other gardeners. Smiling

Frenchy,

I agree! I enjoy everyone talking and sharing their experiences of their salvias.

I got 'Arp' set up to be salvia plant of the day in 2 or 3 days, since we were all talking about it.

I agree completely. I keep many herbs for the feel and the fragrance of the foliage. Rosemary is one of them. I call them my touchy, feely plants.

At the risk of being ostracized here, I like the blooms of Salvia but do not like the smell of the foliage. Whistling Agastache on the other hand can be wonderful. Big Grin

I don't subscribe to Taxon but you can read the abstract at this link that suggest a few others that should be under Salvia. http://www.ingentaconnect.com/... I tip my hat to you.

A must have plant in my garden due to its uses in cooking: especially roasted fish, sweet potatoes. I'm going to try propagating from my rosemary plant, which is about 5 years old and gives me plenty of leaves for cooking. It is sort of mingled in with some other plants so I don't worry about trimming. But I'd like to try propagating in case it gets too woody as others have said.

I still have the rosemary that I planted 30 years ago! I have trimmed it back a lot many times over the years. They are easy to propagate. I have even, on occasion, accidentally rooted some cuttings in water. I had put them in a bouquet and after the flowers faded I left them in and changed the water several times until I noticed some roots forming, so I potted them up, then later planted them.

I have cut the dead wood out many times. In fact it needs another trim, as do the others in that same section.

I cannot grow rosemary to save my soul. I know it is hardy in my region (Pacific NW), I think I just can't give it sharp enough drainage or something. It winters over fine, but then just turns dead in early spring. I treat it as an annual, much like I do lavendar. I've tried numerous cultivars over the years (Arp, Hill's Hardy, Tuscan Blue, Barbeque), no luck.

Mine grows in heavy clay. Of course I amend while planting, but then it grows on its own.

They have survived 15 degrees. I think that they enjoy hot summers. Do your summers stay cool?

We get pretty hot in the summer. They do fine from planting in spring through winter, then just when things start breaking dormancy, poof, they up and die on me. This year I will try adding gravel/sand to the planting hole to see if they just get root rot in our heavy spring rains or something. I know they grow here, I've seen some that are full sized shrubs, I just can't get them past the first year for some reason.

What size container do you purchase? I planted some very small ones not too long ago and they started blooming in November. They were covered in blooms, actually. These were in about 2" containers, meant for ground cover.

Deb ~ Do you have a lot of humidity in your climate? If so, you might want to grow as a houseplant.
