It hit me today, upon reading daylily book 6 of innumerable, that I have no Complete Self daylilies. Then, I realized that I don't think I've ever seen one at a daylily farm, or horticultural center, or public garden, or arboretum.

Do you grow any Complete Selfs? If yes, would you mind sharing pics?

I had to look the term up. If this is the definition you would go by for a complete self, I don't know of any.
" In a complete self the segments, throat, pistil and stamens will all be the same color."

The daylily dictionary gives this:
"A flower having perianth segments all of the same color. The throat region can be a different color. In a complete self the segments, throat, pistil and stamens will all be the same color. "

It gives these two cultivars as examples - 'Jerusalem' and 'Satanic Majesty'

Here's an unregistered dip that I have had growing in my garden for the past thirty years.... It pretty much fits the description....

I think it does and I have it in my garden!

I guess I am not very observant.I often looked at Buttered Popcorn and admired the color and how it stood out in the garden. I don't think I ever realized one reason it did was because it was a complete self and that the total bloom being the same color seems to make the bloom stand out more.

Agreed! I don't pay a lot of attention to the pistils and stamen compared to the color of the bloom. I have noticed different colors of pistils and stamen, but had never given a thought to the 'complete self' daylily.

After looking at all of my pictures, I think Buttered Popcorn may be the only one that I have like that.

I think the definition also assumes that the throat is the same color as the petals, which are the same color as the pistils and stamens...no eye or watermark or halo or edge.

It's pretty pathetic that I have posted this thread and have been growing several complete selfs for years, including Buttered Popcorn!

I think the first two sentences you quoted give the definition of a self. The third sentence gives the definition of a complete self.

After finally realizing I have a bunch, I came to that same conclusion. I wonder if there are any red or purple ones? That'd be really unique.

I know selfs aren't all the rage these days, and seemingly may never be again, but I for one would love to see a deep purple or red black complete self!

I have far too many yellows for some reason. I'm not even very fond of that color.



Several of the newer-to-me yellows (Carolicolossal, Condilla, Goldie Fritz, Precious de Oro, Solar Attack, Yellow Light [Smokey's garden name] and even H. citrina) are complete selfs. I'm really a dunce. Still, the more you know...

I do have one yellow self, Isaac, which is think is disqualified by a very green throat.
