Compost pile might be my treasure pile. I'm sure there's plenty of irises that have been CLOSE to worthy enough to release, some really, really fantastical ones that just otherwise, aren't good. I'm sure that even if they're not great, I'd love them....or...at least see if I can breed out the issue in crosses.

Sometimes an iris is great, but too similar to another named variety to be introduced, so it goes by by. They often look much like one of the parents.

Tom ~ Good point! There are SO many similars out there. It must be quite the challenge to really produce something really new and unique, as well as have all the good qualities that they should have.

I have noticed that many "new" irises have taken over 10 years to produce. Then someone, sometimes the same hybridizer, will just cross it with another, and get several named varieties from that cross.
