Hi National Gardening Association,
Two questions regarding Kopper King hibiscus, currently growing in my salty, sometimes underwater, south facing sheltered backyard on Long Beach Island NJ:
Are the flower petals edible if dried for tea?
How and when should the plants be divided?
I purchased these two Kopper King hibiscus plants eight years ago, which now grow six feet tall by four feet wide with flowers the size of dinner plates in July.
Known as swamp mallow here, my hibiscus are happy perennials.
Your comments would be appreciated, please.
Thank you,
Leslie

I can't specifically answer your question about whether Kopper King is edible, but this article describes the varieties that are generally used in tea, those that I'm familiar with.

In various articles about this interesting, complex hybrid, I see no mention of its use as a tea, but a few articles do mention that all hibiscus petals are edible. I'm not linking them because I don't know how credible they are.

This wikipedia article describes the fascinating parentage of Kopper King. It will be even more amazing if it makes a tasty drink!

Hibiscus sabdariffa is the species used to make a tangy tea. Kopper King is unrelated (it is a Hibiscus moscheutos cross), although it has a similar look... but is not the same thing at all.
