A little more progress, and from a different angle. Do you think it is an inflorescence?

Yes it appears to be a terminal spike. This means the orchid is at its last leg.
At least it is giving you one last chance to enjoy its blooms before it goes.❤️

@tarev, wow first time I've learned about terminal spikes. I just read this more on Phal but might be the same.
https://orchideria.com/termina...

That explains what happened to some of my dendrobiums. Good thing is they seem to continue to produce babies.

If I may -

YES
terminal - "of, forming, or situated at the end or extremity of something.

NOT in this case
(of a disease) predicted to lead to death, especially slowly; incurable.

And yes, this cane is done growing, but it is not dying.

Thank you, Tarev. And thank you, Ursula. I understand the context of the use of terminal in this case, at the tip, but not sure about the "on the way out" part.

The stem that had the remnants of an inflorescence when I got it in March is still alive and a few more stems have grown. Do individual stems only bloom once?

When I try to find info about Dendrobiums, the articles I read say there are tons of different ones and they do different things. These seem like reliable sources, but I'm not familiar enough with orchids to recognize reliable info:
https://www.aos.org/orchids/cu...
https://www.orchidweb.com/dend...
I know MOBOT. Not perfect, but I consider reliable:

Update on the first orchid I rescued from the moss ball.

One that looked OK but by the time I went to rescue it, all of the roots were rotted. I think the rot has stopped. Like the others, it is suspended above shallow water that touches only the tips of the healthy looking roots.

My most recent rescue, which had no roots. Some are growing now and it feels solid now. It was weightless and completely desiccated when I got it.

I rescued this from a moss ball 2nd, but right away upon purchase. It has grow a LOT of roots & a couple new leaves. It's in a soda bottle cut in half with the top part (lidless) upside-down. This has done a good job of holding the plant above water while allowing the roots to go through the hole into the water. I had to cut the original opening to make it bigger. There are so many roots, they were starting to smush against the side of the original opening.

And it is also possible, maybe that terminal spike may also attempt to make a keiki just depends how things go. Whatever it is that seems to be stressing the orchid, so it may make these last ditch effort. Smiling

Is mine one of these? Are they not supposed to bloom at the tip like in these pics?:

Thank you, Ursula! Thank you, Gigi, for the comments and acorn! I don't know what I'm doing, just copying pics I've seen.

I wish Daisy could see these. She is who inspired me to try them in water. So far, it's going well I think. Not being able to see the roots led to the near death of the 2 I thought were doing well in the wire moss balls.

The one forming the bloom thing has so many healthy white roots & some are attached to a couple of rocks. It's in a glass cup with about ½" of water touching just roots, not the part where everything comes together. I let it go dry, then add water again the next day, so mosquito larvae can't mature and hatch.

I've had success with using pure lecca balls but I need to supplement with a liquid fertilizer to give it nutrients. The ones with lecca balls have strong roots.

A progress update. The shorter stem to the right is also forming an inflo.
Thumb of 2022-10-03/purpleinopp/b4cb11

Another mystery clearance orchid is doing something. Also, the leaves coming out of the left corner may be a cutting that took root. I accidentally broke the top part of a stem off so I stuck it in the corner there to take root if it could. When I tug slightly, there is resistance.
Thumb of 2022-10-03/purpleinopp/19c768

Is this an inflo?
Thumb of 2022-10-03/purpleinopp/eb4088

This is fun, roots are starting to grow out of the holes. The lower hole has a Plectranthus cutting stuck in, to make sure the bark doesn't stay moist too long.
