Myrmecophila Motes Long Shot is a registered hybrid.
I found it listed both ways. As brysiana x grandiflora OR as grandiflora x brysiana. This is know as a reciprocal cross. The reason the name does not change is because as a primary hybrids, the available genes come from just two species.
Flowers are cool looking, kind of a bronzy/orange color, white lip with amethyst veins. Very striking color!!

If the label is only brysiana, then properly it would be Myrmecophila brysiana 'Orange Belle'.
It would be a species then and stay more compact.

I can't wait for it to bloom, they are supposed to be fragrant and I hope there's a lot of orange and pink coloration, rather than just yellow and bronze but I'm sure they will be pretty either way. The original label on my plant said:

Myrmecophila 'Motes Long Shot'
(grandiflora x byrsiana 'Orange Belle'(1655)

I notice the Motes Orchids website has it currently listed as Myrmecophila Motes Long Shot (grandiflora x brysiana) (1655) - same as my label but without the notation 'Orange Belle'

Remember, Orange Belle is just a clonal name. He probably has several. Maybe one with a shorter spike, one with darker flowers, and one with excellent shape.
He gives different clonal names so he can tell which one he used making a particular cross.

This thread, supposed to be about growing orchids as houseplants, has been hijacked. It has become the Orchid ID Forum. Sad

DaisyI said: Yes, BigBill has screamed at me quite a bit about growing in water. I usually have 1/3 to 1/2 the roots in water. The only roots in water when I start are roots that were under bark but, all the Phals I have in water were rootless when I started. If you use a narrow necked vase or canning jar, the humidity from the water will allow the plants to grow roots. Then the roots put themselves in water. The yellow one is one of the originals so 5 or 6 years.

I have mounted 3 - 4 of them after they grew roots but I have never attempted to put them back in bark. This is one of the remounted Phals:

Most of my orchids I have growing on the oak tree. But last year from 2 orchids as houseplants, I rescued a few from Lowe's. I have a friend who loves Phals so I revive the orchids make them healthy and make it rebloom, then on special occasions, I give some to her as gifts.

These are my 2 houseplant orchids:

And this one, I rescued last winter from Lowe's clearance rack. All the blooms were gone but the spikes had buds so I knew they will rebloom.

This one came to me with no leaves and hubby asked me to revive it for my friend. I totally give Agro-Thrive credit for reviving this. My friend has no idea she will get this back once all the buds open. This will be a nice surprise once we give this back to her.

It is indeed a beautiful color and the blooms are big. When I saw it first at Publix the color was very vivid that I just could not walk past it without taking it home with me. I'm also surprised that the second bloom is just as gorgeous as the bloom when I purchased it a year ago. Even hubby is impressed with the blooms.

Sorry about causing anyone to be Sad I am guilty of getting off track at times and I apologize to all. I would delete my posts but then it just leaves large blank spaces, so please just scroll past all of my posts and carry on.

@BigBill, I'm sorry for getting you involved in my off track conversation regarding my unknown orchid but I thank for your informative help. Thumbs up

You were fine Lin, just a little off track but that's the way these threads tend to go.

My complaint was about the inability to have a conversation about an orchid anywhere on this entire website without having to put up with abuse. If I feel the need to be ridiculed or put down, I'll hike on over to the Orchid Forum.

#2 is blooming. It's wild how it takes so long for the buds to finally get ready. More purple in person, pics look pink.

That's a pretty one! I gave one to Sumire that I would describe as black raspberry. It looks too pink in all the photos. This one is closest but still not quite right.

2 of the clearance orchids I got about a month ago. This one is still how it was when purchased, with a few random stems stuck in.
Thumb of 2022-04-12/purpleinopp/249076

This is the one I liberated from the hanging "moss ball" about 5-6 weeks ago. It is in a cup of water (about 1/2" at the bottom) with a couple of rocks to keep it from being too wobbly.

Both are Dendrobiums. The one should be happy growing in pebbles over water. I dropped one in an empty terracotta pot by my sink. It rooted and bloomed before I got around to putting it out in the greenhouse. I still haven't potted it in anything more than a pot but it still blooms every year.

Is the other in bark?

Thank you! It's chunks of bark & bits of sphagnum moss - that I can see. Who knows what else could be in there. I'd like to change that because I think it's going to get too muddy as the bark decomposes but I'd like to keep it in the same pot.

I wondered about using some lava rocks with just a few pieces of bark, so as it decomposes, any muddiness should wash out of the holes when I water. But I don't have any lava rocks so I also though about putting 1 decent size rock in there with maybe a jar lid to hold just a bit of water at the bottom. IDK, planning stage... thoughts welcome.

I'm starting to like growing them in combinations of bark and leca. But I have 2 smaller ones that are very happy with 100% leca balls. So all my mini rescue will be converted to leca.

Oh, I forgot about leca. I've never had any, but I've been intrigued for a few yrs with other people's anecdotes.

I still do not do the full hydro because I feel like it is high maintenance. I just use it like any other orchid bark. It holds the water for a few days and the orchid roots seem really healthy on my leca grown mini-phals.
