Peony 'Viking Chief' (Krekler-Roy Klehm, 1978) is a dark pink, semidouble, lactiflora cultivar: medium height @36", fuchsia pink flowers, deep pink flecks, gold circle of stamens, and pink center petals. Registered by Roy Klehm. Bred by William H. Krekler (1900-2002) from Somerville, OH who has 416 peony cultivars registered with the APS.

A species cross of Marie Crousse & Spring Beauty. Seedling selected by and named after Mrs. Byron Gist of Amarillo, Texas. Bred by Col. J.C. Nicholls, Ithaca, NY (1874-1961) of Nicholls Gardens. G.H. Wild & Sons introduced many of Nicholls' 88 cultivars.

Bred by Don Hollingsworth from Maryville, Missouri who has ~50 peonies listed with the American Peony Society.

Paeonia officinalis 'Alba Plena' (Origin before 1907, but could date back to the 17th century) is probably a peregrina x officinalis hybrid cultivar: full double, pure white flowers, occasional pink or red flares, no side buds, and medium height at 2-3 feet. A very old cultivar also known as 'The White Memorial Day Peony'. The only sure thing you can say about this peony is that it's white and looks good in the garden.

Peony 'President Roosevelt' (Warnaar, 1905) is a red, double, lactiflora cultivar: brilliant raspberry red, rose shape, large flowers, richly fragrant, early midseason, medium height at 3 feet. Warnaar is from the Netherlands and only has one peony registered with the American Peony Society. Hollingsworth Peonies lists this peony as a Franklin introduction, however they appear to be referring to Peony 'President Franklin D. Roosevelt'. I believe 'President Roosevelt' was named after Teddy.

Peony 'Pecher Rose' (Calot 1867) is a pink lactiflora cultivar: double, fragrant, medium height, large creamy rose pink, center petals crimped and folded resulting in a frilly effect. AKA 'PĂȘcher RosĂ©' and 'Pecher'. Bred by Jacques Calot (France) a long, long time ago. Calot has 115 peonies listed with the American Peony Society. Apparently sold his peony collection to Felix Crousse in 1872.

Gumm (1857-1931) Remington, IN. He has 29 peonies registered with the American Peony Society, most of them released around 1930. He was an active member of the Commercial Peony & Iris Growers Association.

Looks somewhat like 'Felix Crousse'. Introduced by the firm Doriat & Son & Debatene, France. Doriat introduced around 50 peonies.

Peony 'Crusader' (Glasscock, 1940) is an officinalis x albiflora hybrid: 32" tall, semi-double scarlet red flowers with 3 rows of petals surrounding gold stamens, early bloomer, green carpels with red tip, round buds, medium stiff stems with reddish cast, and medium dark green foliage. Lyman D Glasscock (1875-1972) Elmwood, Illinois which is about 25 miles northwest of Peoria. He was succeeded by his daughter Elizabeth Falk.

Paeonia 'Carol' (Bockstoce, 1955) is a red, double, early, 32" tall, officinalis x lactiflora hybrid. Good stems, but requires support. Cardinal red, full flower with large petals arranged in a rosette. Slightly fragrant, no side buds. William S. Bockstoce (1876-1963) Pittsburgh, PA. worked mostly on officinalis x lactiflora crosses. Of his 16 introductions, 'Carol', 'Henry Bockstoce' and 'Dianna Parks' remain popular.

Peony 'Butter Bowl' (Rosenfield, 1955) is a 36" pink, lactiflora cultivar. A Japanese type flower with a butter yellow center surrounded by rose-pink petals, which fade to shell pink. A vigorous, upright grower. Originated by J.F. Rosenfield (1855-1934) Indianapolis, Indiana. Appears that one of his more famous peonies is 'Karl Rosenfield, which was introduced in 1908.

Peony 'Buckeye Bell' (Mains 1956) is a 24" semi-double hybrid (officinalis x albiflora). Dark red, medium sized flower. Wide outer petals and narrow center petals, interspersed with stamens, yellow anthers and red filaments. Carpels covered by petals. Walter Mains from Belle Center, Ohio introduced about 20 peonies in the mid 1950-60s. Only 'Buckeye Belle' and 'Walter Mains' are currently listed by Klehm Nursery.

Paeonia 'Bowl of Beauty' (Hoogendoorn, Netherlands, 1949) is a 32" pink lactiflora cultivar. A Japanese type bloom, very fragrant, midseason. Guard petals are fuchsine rose, staminodes are pale lemon yellow (creamy). Sometimes rose petals are mixed in with the staminoides. Flowers can reach up to 12" in diameter. Hoogendoom registered a total of 7 peony cultivars, all in 1949.

Paeonia 'Border Charm' (Hollingsworth, 1984) is a 24" yellow Itoh hybrid peony. Compact and dwarf. The flowers are a soft sulfur yellow single (or semi-single). Deep bluish green foliage. Petals tips are a lighter shade of yellow. Flower has large red flares and a prominent center of sheathed carpels and red stigma. Strong stems that arch form a wide, low bush. Support is not usually required. It is a cross of a peony lactiflora cultivar and tree peony 'Alice Harding.' American peony breeders started introducing Itoh hybrids in the early to mid 1980s. This was one of those early releases.

Paeonia 'Big Ben' (Auten, 1943) is a 36" tall, full double lactiflora species cultivar with deep red flowers and small sidebuds. Stout reddish stems and a sweet fragrance. Sometimes described as a dark red bomb. Edward Auten Jr. (1881-1974) was a Princeville, Illinois banker that introduced close to 300 new peony cultivars. Started out as a hobby and ended up as a full time profession. He was especially noted for his red peonies like 'Big Ben', 'Chocolate Soldier', and 'Early Scout'.

Paeonia 'Blaze' (Fay, 1973) is scarlet red, single, lightly fragrant, midseason, 32" tall, hybrid peony. Bright red wavy petals with a gold center. A strong growing variety with sturdy plant habit. Parentage Bravura x self. Registered by David Reath. Vulcan, Michigan, June 30, 1973. Orville Fay from Northwood, Illinois introduced only 5 peonies. Four of the five remain popular: Prairie Moon, Paula Fay, Coral Fay, and Blaze.
