[ Snapdragon (Antirrhinum Aromas™ Red Spice) | Posted on February 20, 2018 ]

I grew the snapdragon Aromas Red Spice in 2017. I grew the plants from seed and transplanted them outside in the Spring. The plants grew well but never reached their full height. They may have been stunted by not having enough water since they were planted close to a mature pine tree and in full sun. The flowers were a deep red color but had very little in the way of scent. Considering that all the many snapdragons I've grown over the years had absolutely no scent these are an improvement. However, if you are expecting a plant with a heavy, wafting scent you will be disappointed. But even without much scent they are one of the prettiest red snapdragons I have grown.

[ White Snakeroot (Ageratina altissima) | Posted on February 20, 2018 ]

White Snakeroot grows wild in my garden in NYC. At first I thought it was a weed but later found out that it was a native plant. I always make sure to leave some plants when I'm weeding my garden in spring and summer. I find the small white flowers to be quite attractive. It also blooms late in the summer/early fall when hardly anything else in the garden is blooming. The pollinators flock to it! The seeds are wind dispersed, but I haven't found it to be horribly invasive. The seedlings are easy enough to pull up and so far, none of my neighbors' yards have sprouted seedlings. This despite my typically having 10-20 plants flowering each year. I tend to have the same patch of them come up each year with a few stragglers about 3-4 feet away. My main patch is in partial to full shade and the plants grow about two feet tall.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Comic Strip') | Posted on February 14, 2018 ]

Although registered as a dormant, my potted Comic Strip acts more like a semi-evergreen. This explains why it hasn't multiplied well for me. Comic Strip did produce a proliferation in 2017 but it did not survive.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Carousel Princess') | Posted on February 14, 2018 ]

Although registered as a semi-evergreen, Carousel Princess acts as a dormant daylily in my northern garden.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Big Blue') | Posted on February 14, 2018 ]

Although registered as a dormant, this cultivar acts as a semi-evergreen for me in my northern garden. This would explain why it has not multiplied well in my garden as typically only dormant cultivars do well for me.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Big Rainbow') | Posted on October 3, 2017 ]

Huge bicolor fruits! One slice is perfect for even larger slices of bread. Very meaty and juicy. I recommend leaving them on the vine until more red color shows for best flavor. If you do, best to use them within a day or so.

[ Pansy (Viola x wittrockiana 'Flambe Red') | Posted on September 20, 2017 ]

Flambé Red is advertised as a color-changing pansy. Flowers start out as a vibrant purplish-red. As the flowers age the color lightens to almost a rose red. I find both colors to be attractive.

[ Impatiens walleriana 'Shady Lady Pink' | Posted on September 20, 2017 ]

Shady Lady Pink has flowers that range from white with a blush of pink to very pale pink. I believe the Shady Lady varieties prefer to be planted in full shade. I have the pink planted in partial shade and it started dying back during the height of summer. The red variety that is planted in full shade has done much better. Neither has bloomed as much as my Tempo series however.

[ Bellflower (Campanula Fancy Mee®) | Posted on September 16, 2017 ]

Since I purchased this plant I had it under grow lights indoors. It has been a non-stop blooming machine!

I have recently moved it outdoors in order to harden it off in preparation for planting outdoors. It is still blooming and is outperforming my campanula (Blue Clips) that is planted in a raised bed.

[ Busy Lizzy (Impatiens walleriana 'Tempo Cherry Butterfly') | Posted on August 12, 2017 ]

I grew this plant this year and am very pleased with it. Flowers constantly. Has not had any problem with powdery mildew at all. As of early August the plant has formed a nice clump in full shade.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Miss Piggy's Feather Boa') | Posted on July 9, 2017 ]

I got Miss Piggy's Feather Boa as a gift plant from the hybridizer this Spring. It bloomed for the first time today and I was surprised at how fragrant it is! I'm not a big fan of spidery types but it does make a nice double flower.

[ Purple Velvet Plant (Gynura aurantiaca) | Posted on June 1, 2017 ]

The flowers to me smell musty or mildewy. Not pleasant! The plants are quite beautiful though.

[ Siskiyou Bitterroot (Lewisia cotyledon 'Galaxy') | Posted on May 27, 2017 ]

Two out of three plants of Galaxy rotted over the summer of 2016. One plant survived and now has buds! Definitely recommend very sharp drainage. Also, do not plant out the first year in areas with cold climates.

[ Lewisia (Lewisia cotyledon 'Regenbogen') | Posted on May 27, 2017 ]

Wintersowed these in a jug with gravel at the bottom. Despite lots of rain the seedlings are doing well in the jug. Same variety at the NYBG but at least one plant has died there. A bit worried they might not be very hardy here.

[ Impatiens walleriana 'Shady Lady Red' | Posted on May 21, 2017 ]

The top side of the leaves are the typical green but the undersides have dark red blotches. See picture in the database.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Restless Heart') | Posted on May 13, 2017 ]

I divided Restless Heart in 2015 & moved it to a new spot. Since then it has multiplied nicely. I was surprised since other plants I divided at the same time were set back (no blooms or new fans the next year). Restless Heart didn't skip a beat!

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Pearl Hammond') | Posted on May 13, 2017 ]

This is one of the few evergreens I have that has lasted several years without dwindling. It has bloomed every other year for me but that is probably because it is in a small, raised bed that is quite crowded now.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Peach Magnolia') | Posted on May 13, 2017 ]

I suspect Peach Magnolia would do better for me if I moved it to a spot with more sun. I'm not inclined to do it though since I already have several late blooming pastel-colored doubles.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Monkey Giggles') | Posted on May 8, 2017 ]

I adore this daylily but it absolutely hates my climate. It started as 5 fans in 2013 and is now down to two fans. It still blooms every year though and I love the flowers. The flowers are definitely pink for me. I believe in order to get the neon orange color it would need to be grown in a hotter climate.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Malihini') | Posted on May 8, 2017 ]

Despite its rather bland description Malihini is a very attractive daylily! I love the colors and the slight toothy edge. It also blooms later in the season which is a plus for me. My only complaint is that so far I have not been able to get any seeds from it. I know it is pod fertile so I'll keep trying.
