lauribob's Plant List: Tender/Annuals

A note from lauribob
I am not interested in selling or trading live plants. I do save seeds once in awhile and would be willing to trade those.

Part - full shade, needs humidity, 18-24" trailing, late winter - early summer. Cute orange flowers that look like dolphins.
2010: Sounded good, looked good in the catalog. I hung it from the front porch. Scraggly thing, didn't amount to anything and never bloomed at all. It's a houseplant.

Tender/Annuals
FS-PS, average-dry, 18-24"
We have a small raised bed in the corner of the vegetable garden for cilantro. One year it took over the whole box and spread into the grass nearby. It was lovely to smell when you cut the grass! I've never had that much luck again, and my hopes of it self-seeding in the box to where I don't have to replant every year have not happened. So I throw seed out there most years and hope for the best. I really want a healthy crop of the stuff so I can just go cut some when I need it.

2022: The box was overgrown with weeds this year so I just dug the whole thing up and added a wheelbarrow full of compost to bring the level of the soil up again. I bought five 4" pots with 3 starts in each one, split them up, and planted. We were late getting home from Mexico this year and things have been a bit of a struggle, getting such a late start on everything. Hoping for the best, but they sat in the greenhouse for a couple weeks and were pretty root bound with each other by the time I ripped them apart. Update: I haven't been paying attention and it looks like they all went to seed. Maybe that will be a good thing? Doesn't give me much cilantro to harvest though..
2017: I'm finally started to get these established so they will self-seed themselves.

2019: I planted some old seed and got a few nice seedlings. Put them in the Z5 along the garage side. They didn't get real tall, but were very jolly.

2023: I planted a bunch of seeds in a couple 4 cells. They took a while to come up, but both are solid now, like grass. I split these up into 3 bigger pots with several in each for the barrels. They did surprisingly well! They were simple to start and filled the pots nicely. I will do these from seed again!

2023: From seed. These did not come up as prolifically as the c. alternifolius, but they are taller so far. I put them all in one pot and put it in the south barrel. They were more impressive than the other papyrus I did from seed this year, but it could be because they were on the south side of the greenhouse in a sheltered location. I'll do these again.

FS-PS, 18-30". These are only hardy to 30°
2024: I picked up 3 of these at Ace Hardware after they suffered some frost damage. They cut them way back and sold for half price. They look like they'll probably survive. I will pot them up, fertilize them, and see how they do in the greenhouse. None of the papyrus I planted from seed has shown up yet. I got a late start this year again.
2022: Put one in each barrel. These were really outstanding this year! Starting with 4" pots, they were a 2-3' high graceful focal point in all 3 barrels this year. I am attempting to overwinter in the pump-house, after cutting them way back so they'd fit on the shelf. We'll see; it's worth a try anyway.

2021: I successfully overwintered this one! It did well in the pot again.
2020: This only came as a single, so I put it in a pot. It's doing really well except that I thought it would be a bit taller and planted some Love-Lies- Bleeding in with it. One of the seeds was apparently a taller variety and I now have a 3 foot amaranth in the pot! Oopsy. I might just snip it off, it looks pretty silly and the dahlia is very compact and bushy anyway. Update - I just left the LLB in there and staked it, the dahlia was a nice robust filler for the lower end of the pot.

FS, average water, 24-28", summer. These are one of my favorite dahlias! Dark leafed, with 3-4" yellow flowers with red eye. They are short and have no problem with wind. I rarely remember to lift these and don't have much luck when I do.
2021: Van B. Kind of scattered these around a bit. Not sure where they all are now. Update: They came up in the GH garden & the Z5.
2018: In the Z5 garden.
