Painted Tongue (Salpiglossis sinuata) |
Have Annuals Feature plant New plants and seeds |
Grows to a mature height of 2 to 3 feet with a one foot spread. Salpiglossis may produce late-season blooms in the cooler temperatures of autumn. Afternoon shade and mulch to cool the roots and keep them moist helps flowering. Sowing: Sow tiny seeds on the surface and cover the area with cardboard. Remove the cardboard when seeds sprout in two to three weeks. OR: Sow indoors 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost. Cover the pots with black plastic to provide darkness until germination. Keep the potting mix slightly moist. Also called Painted Tongue |
February 26, 2023: Seeds sown (Sown in humidity dome, covered with cardboard to keep in darkness. Placed in greenhouse.) March 18, 2023: Seeds germinated (Germinated in humidity dome, Dixie cup planting, in greenhouse. So far, so good!) June 12, 2023: Transplanted (So busy with dahlias, planted late. However, still bloomed beautifully in late June, July.) |

Micro Dwarf Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum Kitchen Minis™ Red Velvet) |
Have Annuals Cottage Garden Decorative Edibles New plants and seeds Veggies, Tomatoes |
Take care not to overwater. Some suggestions for this micro mini tomato: This is trademarked from a Kitchen Minis™ Collection of compact veggies that can be grown indoors in a sunny location or outdoors on a patio table. I'm going to try the greenhouse. 'Red Velvet' is a compact determinate, cherry tomato great for snacking. Dimensions: 10-12 inches tall and 6-8 inches. It needs a bright, sunny location. Water only when needed, OK being on the dry side. Stake with a 12 inch "skew" for the best yield. |
March 21, 2024: Obtained plant (Purchased from Trader Joe's. What a sweet little micro-mini plant to grow. I'll put it in the greenhouse for sunshine during the day and bring indoors for the evening, and will transplant to a bigger pot when it gets warmer.) April 3, 2024 - April 20, 2024: Harvested (Picking and eating a few tomatoes every few days. Tasty! Ripe!) April 5, 2024: Transplanted (Upsized to a bigger pot with drainage. Took cuttings. Zinnia 'Profusion Orange' |
Have Annuals |
I love the single deep orange blossoms, about 2 to 3 inches, and their short - medium size height. At maturity, they are 18 inches tall and spread about 20 inches, and last into frost season as well as hardy marigold, in SE Michigan. They only need fertile soil and water when there are dry spells. They are carefree, attractive, easy to grow for season-long color without deadheading. I will add them all over my landscape in 2021, and will have seed to trade in the following year. |

Also goes by the name Hidden Dragon, Zinnia elegans. Genus 2: Zinnia, Species: hybrida, Variety: 'Mazurkia' Won the 2015 Fleuroselect Novelty Award. Good for landscaping as well as a cut flower (a rare combo) and the double set of petals come gradually so they look different as they mature => single daisies to a mature full pom- pom bicolor style. 3-inch blooms bicolor - red petals tipped in white - color pattern changes as they mature. Handy 2 feet high in full bloom, and spreads about 1 foot wide. Blooming 9 to 12 weeks after sowing - in hot weather with regular watering. |
