antsinmypants's Plant List: Direct Sow

A note from antsinmypants
Feel free to ask about anything in my list you may be interested in. I'm always looking to trade. Just because something isn't in my want list doesn't necessarily mean I don't want it & just because something I have isn't marked for trade doesn't mean it isn't available for trade. I stay busy so don't always get around to updating.

US - 2024

*Ark of Taste Heirloom*
We have a fascination with unusual legumes here at Uprising Seeds. This pea was a new one for us on the farm and one we will certainly be growing more of! Known as 'Roveja' in Italy, it has been grown for centuries in the rugged and harsh landscape of the Sibillini mountains in southeastern Umbria. Its taxonomy is not clear but some consider this small wild pea to be an ancestor to the common pea, others a distinct species. Once a staple of the humble alpine cuisine of the region, it has recently reached a wider audience through a slow food presidium established to preserve and promote it. It is a truly gorgeous pea, multicolored and flecked with contrasting earth tones of browns, reds, blues, and greens. As a soup pea, it is hearty and flavorful with a delightful earthiness and almost fava-esque taste. In Umbria, it is also ground for flour to use in farecchiata also known as "polenta di roveja". Plants vine to about 5', requiring trellising, and feature beautiful bicolor pink and purple blooms.

~We have been growing these beans for about ten years on our farm in southwest Colorado. They are a scarlet runner type with amazing color variation, from deep purple that's almost black to light lavender to a mottled purple to white. The plants are runners in habit and have both white and red flowers which the hummingbirds love! The seed originally came from a friend who works as a midwife in an indigenous Tarahumara village in northern Mexico.~

Direct seed in early spring in cool, moderately rich soil, in full sun or partial shade. Plant in moist, fine soil and gently press seeds down. Do not cover seed as Mignonette needs light to germinate. Germination takes 5-21 days. Thin seedlings to 6" apart. Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before transplanting maintaining a temperature in the seed starting medium of 70°. Mignonette resents transplanting. Do not disturb the roots when planting in the garden.

Centuries ago this highly nutritious foraged wild plant of Eurasia was recognized for its soft, supple texture and nutty flavor and brought into cultivation. The delicate culinary nature of mache belies its unparalleled cold hardiness, making it the perfect winter or cool season green and ideal for winter market farmers. Picture winter salads, resplendent in antioxidants and vitamins harvested straight from the garden or cold frame!
