Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica) |
Have Annuals Grasses Edibles Grains Full Sun |
DND's All Seeds Swap #9 (2022) - Phytocraft - 2021 Foxtail millet (Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv.) is one of the oldest cultivated cereal grains and the most economically important species of the Setaria genus. Foxtail millet is a dual-purpose plant grown for its grain, which is used for human food and animal feeding, and for fodder (see the Foxtail millet forage datasheet). There are many wild and cultivated types, and the latter is divided into many cultivars with differences in height, habit, the structure of inflorescences, number, and color of the grain. Direct seed (recommended): Sow seeds 1/8" deep after the last frost. Cover seeds lightly. Transplant: Sow 4-6 weeks before last frost date. Can be planted in individual containers and then planted out in the field without dividing or they may be seeded in seedling trays. Small seedlings can be separated and transplanted directly from the seedling tray to the garden or field. 75–90 days after planting. |

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor 'Dwarf Mayo') |
Have Annuals Grains Full Sun |
DND's All Seeds Swap #9 (2022) - Phytocraft - Decent yield for sorghum in a cooler area. Plants to ~5'. 2021 Technically broom corn, but the seeds are so beautiful, multi-colored, and easy to thresh that they make a wonderful grain as well. Of all the trialed sorghums, this was the easiest to harvest since the plants are no more than about 6 feet tall. Come time to test the seed for ripeness, you don't have to bend lengthy stems to pinch the seed. Long panicles on thick heads are ideal for making your own brooms. Given lots of space, this variety will tiller heavily, producing a second tier of heads, about 4 feet in height, and later to mature. Dwarf grain sorghum is a warm season, annual forage grass. It can be used for forage production or planted as a wildlife crop. Sometimes referred to as milo, grain sorghum grows similarly to corn, but produces a seed head on top of the plant rather than ears. Dwarf grain sorghum is easier to grow than corn because it tolerates drought conditions very well and doesn't require the high fertility levels that corn does for normal growth. It will grow about 3-4 feet tall. Deer and upland gamebirds will consume the mature seed heads as a good energy source. Days To Maturity: 120 days |
