A DIY Bulletin Board
Posted on Feb 26, 2022 1:56 AM

I don't know about you, but I have purchased a few bulletin boards during my lifetime and they always seemed cheap or not adequate. You try to stick a push pin in the cork and it just won't go. Has that happened to you? Well I'm going to show you how I fashioned one with recycled things and it didn't cost me a penny, just some of my time and remnants of things lying around.

First you will need a packing crate, paint, (your color choice), fabric remnant, picture hanging wire, eye screws, clothespins, and some old garden fencing, (mine was not that old and it was a trash find). I used green paint and I had some maroon gingham fabric from the thrift store that just matched that lovely green so I made my valance and set it aside. Next, I painted my 2 pieces of fence white with chalk paint because it was a dark green and I was not happy with that color. The clothespins are coffee dyed. I used my coffee dye recipe which I will give you if you want. It smells so good!

Next you will either staple the fence to the back on each side or you can use screws or nails and secure it that way. The fencing is to hang all your appointment cards, pics, seed packets, notes, etc. on and I wanted it to look like a window so it does not open out like shutters, but it gives the impression of little shutters at a window at a cabin in the woods. Like at granny's house.

Measure a piece of twine half the length of your valance and thread it through the seam at the top and attach at each side on the back so that it hangs just under the top edge of your crate. Now attach your eye screws and wire to the backside nearer the top.

You are ready to hang your little window and display all your items. I had to crop the pic with all our things on it for privacy. Hope you like my DIY Bulletin Board!

I had to take my bulletin board out to the Lanai to have enough light for the photos.

Some of my recycled crafts
Posted on Feb 25, 2022 6:27 AM

I am a composter of coffee grinds and this has been going on for nigh on 20 years. I have saved stacks and stacks of my used coffee filters after washing and drying them. I've made star ornaments for my Christmas tree, stars for a headboard vignette, covered wood tables, embroidered bookmarks, and angels with the really big filters you get at Starbucks. We can no longer get the coffee grinds at Starbucks. Sad

Since we got a Keurig for Christmas I have started collecting the very tiny filters. These I'm using to make flowers and I will include the photo so you can see how easy it is. These flowers I will use to make bookmarks to give to the library. Some have 2 filters stacked on top each other and some have 3. I sewed a button in the center of each and I will sew them onto the cloth bookmarks after I get those made. Later I will post the pic showing the finished craft.

The hat rack was made using a packing crate from our new dishwasher 4 years ago. I also found some packing crates at the curb and I had 4 or 5 at the same time. The hat rack was super easy to do. First I took a hammer and banged it pretty hard to make some dents and add character. I didn't paint it and that is the original color. I drilled big holes in it for the pegs. The pegs are from the handles of those foam brushes you can get at the dollar tree. I save everything. Then I put eye screws on the back and wired it for hanging. Super easy! I love it. If you cannot get the pegs to fit the holes you can add glue to the ends of the pegs and then put them in. If you'll notice one of the pegs is fashioned by me from a Choke Cherry twig. I made several of those when we cut down the tree 4 years ago.

The hat rack could easily be made into a shelf to hang dried flowers and herb bundles. It could be a display rack for your crafts that you sell at festivals, shops, etc., but I'll bet someone will want to buy the rack when all the items are gone.

Hope you make something and send me a pic. I just love crafting and teaching people how to be good recyclers and using things instead of throwing it into a garbage can.

Strawberries in bloom, etc.
Posted on Feb 24, 2022 12:32 PM

I am happy to report that 2 of the strawberries have blooms. There is only one bloom on each plant, but that tells me I should have strawberries to eat this year, that is if the rabbits don't get them.

I am trying to stay focused on the things in my garden that seem to be living, sprouting, and growing, but when the wind blows and dries everything up it just makes me feel hopeless for having a nice garden. That, plus the ground moles which are working alive around here.

I worked in my neighbor's garden this morning and watered the Pink Baby's Breath plants, the strawberry patch that belongs to me, (She bought the plants for me last year), and the garden to stop erosion that I made for her last year. It's coming along nicely. I also watered her roses and noticed she has Impatiens up from last year. I guess they survived. They are a pretty orange color.

As soon as the PBB blooms I will take pics of that garden. At one end is the strawberries, but I want that whole garden to be in berry plants. She said I could plant whatever I wanted.

I love turning trash to treasure and I found this coffee table at the curb years ago and initially it had a glass top, but the top was missing so I took it home. I thought it would make a nice bench. Here is what I did: I cut a piece of plywood to fit the top and laid it on top and covered that with thick foam cushioning which I just happened to have. Then I stapled a sheet that has a basket design to the plywood underneath with staples. I laid the top on and made two of the biggest cushions at the back with Linen paisley fabric. That used to be a pair of designer pants that I got at my thrift shop. The other 2 cushions were given to me and are a light tan suede. It makes a good seat if need be, or a catchall for when you need extra space quickly. I love that bench and it is right at home in our family room. Tell me what you think of it.

This is part of my basket collection that hang on the wall above my bench. One is a Longaberger and old. Can you spot it?

My Orchid Bloomed Today

You would not believe how good it smells. I was amazed when I walked into the room and saw the blooms. I love it! I will post the original plant and the plant in bloom.

Another Day in Paradise
Posted on Feb 21, 2022 12:32 PM

Crisp mornings and hot evenings, that's what we have. There is another week of mid to high 80's and then it will be Redbud winter. It only lasts a couple of days.

It's very dry here and if I didn't have irrigation I would not have any plants. The wind starts blowing every afternoon and it is strong and zaps up all the moisture. No rain in sight. Mercy!

Peace & Plenty.
