Some of my best mail order plants last year came in July, in the middle of our heat wave. I ordered from a late season sale at Santa Rosa and received HUGE plants, raring to go! Even with the heat, they did great. No dregs, just pots that were very root-bound.
If you are able to shade them for a few days while they acclimate, i think they'll do fine about anywhere. I say that with confidence because I can't think of anyplace worse than Kansas!!!
I have plastic lawn chairs that I set over particularly fussy plants for a few days while they get over any pouting. Our wind is so bad this year, I may have to spring for heavier chairs! Laundry baskets with ventilated sides work well for that too. I have to put a concrete paver on top to hold them down, but it is a good way to baby a plant in hot conditions.
I swore this year that I wouldn't do any buying or planting after June 1, but it wasn't because of the weather. It was an attempt to curb my spending! Also, I resolved to take better care of the plants I already have.
My "last" order for this year came in just under the wire on Friday, an order from Hosta Bargains on ebay. Someone here had recommended them. (Susan?). I received big beautiful hostas with long long roots. Last Saturday our hosta club had a "Hostapalooza" at the extension, and I was working at another booth so I got there too late to get the ones I wanted. Lakeside Paisley Print was the one i had to have. I found it on ebay when I got home, along with several others, of course.
.
I am soooo tempted to break my own rule and order more!
The local nurseries and box stores are still getting in new shipments of fresh plants, so our season is still in high gear. I like traveling to Texas this time of year because I can buy plants on clearance. I try to travel north later in the season to hit their clearance long after our racks are empty. I know, I know, you are really hooked if you plan vacations around plant clearance times!
