Donald when you do the rice the way Tom suggested STAY with the pan! give it a stir or two and it shouldn't take that long to brown-lightly. I do rice, whole grains like Farro and even orzo this way. Then add your HOT liquid, stir, lower the heat and cover the pan. and set your timer.
