Key elements - full sun and very sharp drainage. They tolerate wet feet poorly. It's too cold here in MI to grow them in the ground, but I had several (4) old plants in pots, growing as bonsai specimens. Unfortunately, I lost them all to freezing when a family member inadvertently left the overhead garage door open on one of our -12*F nights. Anyway, the soil they thrived in looked like this:
In the ground, sandy loam is about the most water-retentive you should consider. Anything more water-retentive that that is going to be iffy.
