I agree - this is a good discussion, even if not exactly answering the original question.

I formerly used a lidded "ice cream bucket" to collect my kitchen scraps, which were eventually taken out and added to the compost pile. It didn't take long for that to become quite disgusting, and we also had a separate container going with the coffee grounds/filters. Now my "system" consists of getting a bowl out of the cupboard when I start prepping veggies, fill the bowl with the peels and so on, and walk out in back to dump it on the compost. Wash the bowl with the rest of the dishes. Makes me wonder why I didn't think of doing that before. Hilarious!
