Regarding erinacea, I have had versions of that plant on the patio for the last 10 years or so. Unlike krapohliana v. dumoulinii, it has not been subject to random meltdowns for no apparent reason (the most likely reason for dumoulinii being overwatering, even given my usual mix and watering discipline). Aloe erinacea should be a long lived plant, given good care and a dry enough climate. Really old plants can be spectacular.
You want to dial the light up for the best form and color (maybe even teeth and spines), at least once the plant is about 6 inch pot size (like the one in my previous pic). You do not need to use an extreme rocky mix if the roots fit the pot or are on their way there soon. There is no particular benefit to overpotting. You need to be patient but as far as I can tell growth is year round, not just during the season rain comes in habitat (winter).
