Garden Ideas: Level 1

Wow that's quite a lot of germination! Of course after they get 2 sets of true leaves you can transplant them. I mainly plant hand crosses so they don't generate as much seed in general although in the summer of '21 it was very dry and the pollen was beautiful and fluffy. Although I certainly don't count my seed it appears there are lots more seed than normal. I'm also sure that the stalks dried bed and their seeds were better able to be released from the capsules.

It was a pretty day here in Oregon and not much wind so I planted 25 pots of seed. This is 4-6 weeks earlier than normal for me as I worry about moss growing in the pots and choking out the seedlings but I only planted 1/3 to 1/2 of these packets and in a couple cases I had collected seed from 2 stalks of crossing. I'll be interested to see how these do. When I lived in MA, I planted in the fall and the seed came up in the spring but they were under snow until April.

I use a sterilized mix, so I don't have to worry about any pests, moss, weeds, etc. I use a Peat moss and sand mix, and if unsterilized (I use boiling water) the spores in the peat moss will usually start to grow. I learned it the hard way with growing Aeoniums from seed. In the first week or two, the seedlings are easily killed by fungus, mold, or fungus gnats. Once they grow their second set of leaves, they become more hardy.
