Note - some of the searches for phrases do not find any pages with the phrase and so return the results of searches for just the terms.
These are the results using Firefox my usual browser.
I must be doing something very different when searching with Google.
The search term with quotes, "bearded daylilies" returned About 35 results (0.49 seconds).
The search term with quotes, "bearded daylily" returned About 30 results (0.74 seconds).
The search term without any quotes, bearded daylily, returned About 81 results (0.90 seconds).
The search term, with quotes, "cristate daylily", returned About 6 results (0.46 seconds).
The search term with quotes, "crested daylily", returned About 8 results (0.44 seconds).
The search term without any quotes, crested daylily, returned About 1,000,000 results (0.79 seconds).
The search term without any quotes, cristate daylily, returned About 71 results (0.65 seconds).
The search term without any quotes, crested daylilies, returned About 96 results (0.61 seconds).
Numbers as high as 1,000,000 should be considered as unlikely. Whenever I open page after page of "hits" on Google searches I find that the actual number of pages with relevant "hits" are a very very tiny fraction of the number given in the About results.
I suspect that Google has "learned" over time that I am interested only in pages that are relevant to daylilies and where my search terms are usde in non-trivial ways. It then filters the results it returns for my searches.
