Yes, the plants have distinct sexes (they are dioecious). Here are female and male bupleurifolias side by side. One makes fruit and the other makes pollen, for the most part (note the male in the photo did produce a few abortive female blooms, this happens from time to time).



E. bupleurifolia is the parent that japonica has in common.
