In Alabama you would need short day or intermediate day onions. Intermediates would be better for spring planting. Shorts day onions are better overwintered. In looking for plants in local nurseries, most of them will carry Bonnie plants, and their only offering is a generic sweet red. ( probably a Red Grano) There are many red varieties that do well in Z8 southeast but they are hard to find as plants locally. Dixondale has a better selection which can be ordered. Red Candy Apple is probably the best for spring planting. The antique Red Creole has more bite and is a better keeper.
I grow mostly short day onions as I overwinter them for harvest in May. which leaves me extra space for summer crops. some of the better performers for me. Onion (Allium cepa 'Red Grano') Onion (Allium cepa 'Red Hunter') Onion (Allium cepa 'Rio Rojo') Onion (Allium cepa 'Desert Sunrise') Onion (Allium cepa 'Pink Diamond') Onion (Allium cepa 'Pinot Rouge')
My trial red for 2021 is Chianti
