Thanks for the size perspective. I've seen some pretty small grasshoppers in recent years, along with the normal sized ones, so I did wonder. Almost every time I have visited garden displays of dahlias in recent years, I've seen some grasshoppers, whereas I often see none of them on other types of blooms. Maybe it's because dahlias are late bloomers and grasshoppers don't show up until later in the summer. One of life's little mysteries.

Yes, I now live in Michigan, but that is a fairly recent move, compared to the number of years I've lived in other places.
