The more time goes on, however, I find that being challenged or provoked into questioning personally long-held beliefs or assumptions to be refreshing.

No one should ever immediately embrace something they've been taught or have read, without question. Given all the tools we have available in this day and age, it's fairly simple to follow-up upon hearing something new/different. Information based on empirical research with facts and measured observations instead of theory or commonly held beliefs can be helpful beyond description.

I ran off this article quickly operating on a few hours of sleep(not smart) and found numerous typos AND one of the important website addresses was wrong. For anyone on NGA with the inclination, accessing:

darksky.org

contains a wealth of information about this issue. There's quite a bit to read that addresses concerns regarding safety & lighting with actual studies reporting whether we FEEL safer or ARE safer.

Personal safety via technology is very important! I live in rural Lancaster County, Pennsylvania- on Father's Day, just a few miles from my home, a beautiful Amish teenager was abducted in broad DAYLIGHT, yet several personal home cameras caught the moment. The FBI got involved and now a possibly dangerous predator is behind bars awaiting trial.
