Jill, if you want to plant them outside just put some kind of stakes in the ground/pot and put bird netting over them. The stakes will hold the netting up away from the semps. I also plant heavier types of rocks along the edge of the netting to the squirrels etc. can't go under the edge. This has worked very well for me.
For individual plantings I use wire baskets that I get from the Dollar Store. You can even put a rock on top of them so the critters can't tip them over.
