Many times people are drawn to an iris because of its name. It is probably not an iris they would buy and cherish but its name evokes a happy emotion and along with the bloom the name makes that iris special. If one wants to buy irises based on a popularity vote then that is what makes them happy. To each his own but do not expect us to be as passionate about the same criteria for buying an iris. If I were a hybridizer I would love to win an honor. But I am not so I select my irises without ever consulting their popularity.

I am one that does not pay any attention at all to votes of popularity but I have bought a few based on their name. Smiling I do read the posts here about the hardiness and bloom habits of an iris. I find that very helpful. I pay attention to the ones that grow and bloom well in the south as that means they are more inclined to do well in my garden.

Obsession..... yes, I have an obsession. And what a lovely one it is. Hurray! Many of my fellows on this forum read my posts just to be 'neighborly' as they know I ramble on about the Dwarf irises. Hooray for them! I read their posts recognizing their love for the taller irises that I have for the smaller ones. Hooray for me! If we all had the same desires in a bloom, whether it be class or ratings, then how very limited our gardens would be and how very sad that many irises would not be grown and therefore lost to us all.

As Leslie said above.... "Joy can not always be boiled down to what others and experts say. It also has much to do with the buyer and what they find really makes them happy to have in their garden." So true....... so those of you who desire to buy an iris with a medal then please do so and post the photos here for us to enjoy. For others of us who have a different criteria for purchasing and growing an iris please do so and I look forward to your photos and comments. Smiling

It is a cool morning and I just came indoors for another cup of coffee. Many of my irises are recovering after sitting in lake water and I am happy. I have received a couple of buddy boxes to 'help my iris garden'. Lovey dubby I am glad we are not all alike. I would have gotten bored with this a long time ago and missed knowing so many great people. Smiling
Thro' all the tumult and the strife I hear the music ringing; It finds an echo in my soul— How can I keep from singing?
