I would imagine they would do great in California. I'm in zone 7 and they survive our winters both in ground and in containers. They don't seem to be bothered by slugs, but I don't have a lot of those or gophers. (My garden has other "hiccups".) If I run across additional info, I'll be sure to share.
Your wife is a lucky woman. I suspect she'll be thrilled you planted them for her.
