These are all great suggestions! I live in the central valley too and I'm always on the look out for tropicals.

Right now, I mostly have callas, cannas, hibiscus and upright elephant ears. I would also suggest a Rotheca myricoides (Butterfly Bush), it goes dormant during the winter. It's one of my favorites.
