Here's the long story about how I got rid of the mole..for now. There is no way to prevent them from coming back especially if you have a healthy lawn.

First off they are territorial and most likely there was just one mole. I had tried so many things over the years from poisons, to chemicals, to plain water to flood them and nothing worked. There were times I got rid of one was actually by mistake. The hose was left on too long and the border of my flower bed filled with water. I found a wet mole trying to scurry across the street. Red wagon in hand, I rolled over it's puny head. My neighbor finished him off with a hammer. (EW!) The other time I was mowing and saw the ground pulsing, I ran and got my long screwdriver and hammer and gave it a death sweep and a burial all in one fell swoop. Saw the Earth pulsating again this year (in the very same place!) but by the time I came back it had gone deeper. That area got some good aeration during my search for it!

So without luck at killing them, I tried that spikes that is supposed to have a 50/50 chance of driving them away but not kill it. I warned my neighbors to watch their yards because I expected to be on the good side of that 50%. I was! Sweeney's Mole Spikes from Amazon, the battery operated kind not solar because I wanted it working around the clock and not pooping out on my due to lack of sunlight. I put the 3D batteries in in July and they are still kicking strong over in my neighbor's yard. The package says one spike covers 750 sq ft. with it's ultrasonic beeping that moles hate. I am not sure how many sq ft I have, but I venture to say 1,000 sq ft front lawn. (none in back). But I have always treated it as 2500 sq ft. mainly cuz fertilizer bags cover 5000 sq ft and it's just easier to measure use half the bag. And I am into overkill which you should know that by now.

I bought 4 spikes. (Overkill, remember?) I put one dead center of the yard. Instructions say to bury it so that you can mow over without removing. I tried! It was hard to dig a hole 9" deep and narrow. I got it pretty deep, but still had to remove it when I moved. No biggie. Shrug! The center spike drove the mole to the left edges of the yard. I knew this cuz when I mowed, I could feel where the lawn was soft or where I sunk in. So after 2 weeks, I took out two more spikes and placed them into the soft areas all along the edge of my lawn. Again removing them while mowing. I never did dig another hole. Just placed them as far down as they would go in, about 4". After 2 more weeks or so, that drove them to the other border by the flower bed. I brought out my 4th spike and bordered my lawn and flower bed with them, again into the soft dirt, about every 4-5 feet. It started to run from me fast after that. I found soft dirt in other areas, and just moved each spike as I found new soft soil...all the way until it ran to my neighbors yard in late August. Now she is doing the same.

No doubt it will return. But I will keep doing the same method along with controlling the grubs which they love.
