That's certainly a possibility! Did you ever see a PBS Nature documentary "What Plants Talk About"? It showed how plants have a very elaborate chemical/pheromone system and can actually communicate with their neighbors and recognize and nurture their own offspring. Even more astonishing, when being attacked by bugs can send out a pheromone SOS to attract predators of the bugs that are attacking them! Here is a link to an article about it with a few video shorts from the documentary. Unfortunately it's no longer available to watch online unless your a PBS Member.
