That's certainly a possibility! Did you ever see a PBS Nature documentary "What Plants Talk About"? It showed how plants have a very elaborate chemical/pheromone system and can actually communicate with their neighbors and recognize and nurture their own offspring. Even more astonishing, when being attacked by bugs can send out a pheromone SOS to attract predators of the bugs that are attacking them!
