Aloe marlothii

Winter aloe flowers

Thumb of 2018-05-14/Baja_Costero/d06155

Here is the rosette

And here is a closeup of the flowers opening

The sideways sweeping racemes with vertically oriented (secund) flowers are the signature feature of this tree aloe.

It is a beautiful beast of a plant. The rosette will not grow wider than in the picture above, but it will grow taller, to like 12-20 feet in old age.

Very rarely do I find banner-shaped objects among my succulent photos, but this raceme was a near-perfect fit. Thumbs up

Thanks, Karen.

Here is a seedling I grew from that plant (presumably pollinated by one of its neighbors). Looking very well armed at a young age (in an 8 inch pot). Smiling The flowers will tell me everything (I hope) about the paternity, so I'm looking forward to that maybe next winter, in a year and a half.

It's a cute plant when it's that young.

What is not to like about a succulent banner!?!!

I had to peek to see what type of succulent generated this bloom.

As always, very nice! Thumbs up

Thank you so much for the kind words and the acorns. Smiling

That sliver alone would be enough to tell an aloe nerd exactly which species (of the 500 or so in the genus) this plant is. So it's a signature thing, a 1 in 500 thing, the thing you look for when you want to nail down the ID. Distilled essence of marlothii, as it were.

So much info in so little space! Smiling
