The Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) is an insect that all gardeners should become familiar with. After my encounter with it, I did much research and I am happy to share the information that I've found with my fellow gardeners.
Elfie ~ I don’t understand why you would NOT want them. Why would you kill them? They indeed are great creatures. And by your own admission they break down waste much faster than worms.
Name: Elfrieda Indian Harbour Beach, Florida (Zone 10a)
They are so efficient they turn your compost into a nasty, runny slurry. All that seems to be left are the maggots as they've eaten most of the compost. Their usefulness is invaluable, I understand, in places like pig farms where they can take care of that tremendous amount of pig poo.
