Now there's a blast from the past - Saguaro National Park, not the lichen
We spent a few days in the park, photographing seemingly everything, decades ago.
I think we missed the lichen though
In answer to @Vals_Garden 's question, the lichen was growing on rocks. You can Google Javelina Rocks SNP and read more about their composition, but basically they're a kind of granite. Lichen of various species seem to be able to colonize most kinds of rock, though. I remember being struck at the time by the bright color of this particular kind.
Thanks @EscondidoCal for the link about lichens. I hope you'll submit your own lichen banner, if you haven't already done so. I know what you mean about colorful lichens in the California desert areas. I saw some great examples during my visit to Joshua Tree NP, years ago.
