They are a joy to watch, and probably the closest I can ever enjoy them roaming freely. They are well fed and well taken care of.
I have to agree that the geraffs would do a much better job than those county tree hackers. The couple rare trees they trimmed are a total loss this spring . They were topped off and butchered. They were part of my understory tree collection. It is not a tri color leaf any more a rare lime green and white stripped smooth bark maple tree that I grew from a seedling. It had beautiful pink, lime and cream colored heart shaped leaves . Now this season the new growth leaves are a solid green long half moon shaped leaf and not heart shaped or tri-colored.
The pic of the tree is in my data bank. Doesn't even resemble the tree it was.
Once more than 1/3 …or more is trimmed and far more than that was trimmed off in one setting can reduce the quality and the amount of color as well as activate the slow decline of the entire tree until it eventually dies. Topping trees is a NoNo…it's guaranteed a slow death.
Some of the scalped branches have no new branches or leaves growing at all. They stick up like naked 6" stems that offer no shade. It will set seed this fall. I might try growing another…..takes 10 years or more for a tree to grow 8-10' of this type and size in order to plant in soil in this climate. The former scalloped rare tree was over 22 years old. Full and and beautifully shaped . It will never look the same again. Nor will any of the other 6 trees they mutilated.
It's sad but also ok. I have more than enough trees and shrubs in the garden to keep me busy. It's a new day and a minor event in the greater scheme of things.
