Allgold Broom

Cytisus x praecox 'Allgold'
Pea Family (Fabaceae)

This small bush was so wonderfully fragrant, I had to look up more about it. And I don't know how they managed to get it to not die during our winters, unless it's kept in a greenhouse and then moved out in spring for the warmer season. I would have found a spot in my yard just for the fragrance.

Yes, that photo was taken April 12th this year. The crocuses were still open and some things hadn't started leafing out yet, so I'd say early spring, at least for my zone.

Edit: Here's some info I found about it at Monrovia's site:

Nancy - I grow Genista 'Bangles' very successfully here in my 4b garden. Brooms are very hardy and pretty much the only difference is that Cytisus doesn't like lime/chalky soils but Genista does Thumbs up

If you don't think Cytisus will work in your soil do go and buy a Genista Thumbs up

When I looked it up and saw Zone 6 for the coldest, I started wondering how they got it to live here. I've seen a few sites now list Chicago as Zone 6a, and further away from the lake is 5b, so wonder if it's not just global warming at work and it really can survive in Zone 5 (or what used to be Zone 5). Your variety, Genista 'Bangles', seems much more cold hardy, down to Zone 2. Is it as fragrant as Allgold? I'll have to look into these more!
