Ick factor. Alternatively, picky eaters

On the day I took this photo, I saw these red aphids on virtually every plant of this type (woodland sunflower, Helianthus divaricatus), but on no other wildflower in that area of open woodland.

Like the dancing aphids literally using personal straws to get the plants juices.

Huge thanks to everyone who took the time to express their reactions to this admittedly offbeat banner image. I'm glad some of you found it weird, fun, intriguing, educational, and so on. Crawling and flying invertebrates are an inseparable part of the lives of plants. Endlessly fascinating, as well as sometimes beneficial, and sometimes detrimental.
