... a new Autumn Fern and a variegated Hosta will soon fill in the bare spots.

Along the front of the patio bed the False Garlic bulbs and the blue Pincushion Flowers were just beginning the bloom process...

All the while, in a small corner of the lawn, an Adonis aestivalis [Pheasant's Eye] encouraged everyone to slow down, bend down and look closely at an exquisite flower most people never looked at, OR IF THEY DID, NEVER REALLY SAW.

My duplex neighbor, Conchita, likes RED flowers,,, and lots of them. My friend Lethy likes lots of flowers... and she likes them as the dominant theme in her garden. My best friend Janis likes plants that "stand straight up... and bloom a lot."
This last photo shows my preference for the varying sizes, shapes, textures and colors of perennial foliage. The colors are generally much softer and more pastel than flower colors. And that lends a quiet sense, or serene quality as a friend put it, that I enjoy very much in my garden.
On rare days in central Oklahoma, when clouds soften the sun's glare and the wind is a pleasant breeze instead of a destructive force... sitting out in this softly colored space is a wonderful, peaceful, satisfying experience.
Sitting in the garden on a day like that... with a glass of Port [Warre's Otima 10 year Tawny Port]... and a book of essays by Will Durant [Fallen Leaves] or one of poetry by Mark Van Doren [That Shining Place]... maybe some music [Leonard Cohen, Sixto Rodriguez, K.D. Laing with Tony Bennet... how about "Love was my Alibi" by Kris Fogelmark or "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley or maybe even "Give Me Flowers While I'm Living" by Champion Jack Dupree]. Just thinking about those times in the garden is relaxing.
Don't mind me... I'm old, my back still hurts from the surgery, the weather has been miserably cold and windy, and there are precious few leaves in the garden... the above is just me fantasizing something better. Maybe tomorrow.
In the meantime, PBS beckons with "All Creatures Great And Small" and "Vienna Blood." Best of all, the RedBox had the new "Dune: Part One."
I think I'm rattling on... and considering the venue... I think I'll stop.
