Ursula said:About using the proper latin name -
Years ago I kept Tropical fish. It was around that time that I was visiting my brother near Koblenz/Germany. I found out that the local aquarium society had their monthly meeting and I thought it was fun to attend. It was fun, there was really no difference between their enthusiasm and that of our local society here nearby. Except, as we were discussing my Angel - breeding endeavor, I realized quickly that talking about Angelfish ( that would translate to Engelfisch) resulted in "what is that", they called it a Schleierschwanz ( Veiltail) But if you said Pterophyllum scalare, everybody understood!
It was then that I understood the importance of Latin names in addition to common names.

I'd think of a Betta if someone said veiltail. Blinking

When I asked myself to pronounce almond, I realized there's no L if I'm saying "with almonds" and it sounds like "ommunds" with barely 2 syllables. But if it's the first word of something like almond brittle, it sounds like ALL'mund, with a lot of L.

Aunt... I've always said ant, but I hear "ON'tee" a lot around where I am now, and sometimes "ayant" pronounced as somewhere in between 1 and 2 syllables, but sometimes stretching it to 2 whole syllables.

Dracaena? dray'SEE'nuh? druh'SEE'nuh? DRA'ka'EE'na?

Saguaro? No idea...

Cholla? Are you saying CHOY'a or CHOLL'a? Or something else?

That's the first time I've "heard" anyone say Saguaro. Thank you! I could do a lot of things with this word but what you said would have been near the bottom of the list. LOL!!! ; )

Aunt used to be "ant" for me, but for whatever reason I say "ont" now.

What about this one: Glechoma. I've heard "Glee-kลma" but also "Gleh-kลma."

So proud of myself for knowing the correct way to pronounce "saguaro" (not that I have much occasion to say it...) Where is the "patting myself on the back" emoji??

But what about "guajillo" -- isn't it wa-he-oh ? But I keep hearing it pronounced (again on the cooking shows) with a hard "g" Confused

Tiffany, thanks for the nut! Acorn

Never heard of it but should be as you say if it's a Spanish word, which it looks like.

Check out this site...I tried playing with other words but they weren't listed?! But you can hear variations on guajillo. As you might suspect, there are options. Also found a site that said gwa jill o. There you go! Hilarious!
