Sphinx caterpillar
The immature stage of the White-lined sphinx moth. These moths resemble hummingbirds as they hover over flowers, sipping nectar.

Thanks for your comments, thumbs and acorns! This guy was feeding on purslane weeds in my yard (
), but they will feed on many plants. I enjoy watching the adult moths feed in the evenings on flowers.
