Gorgeous Gooseberries

Gooseberries (Ribes uva-crispa), ripening in the Children's Garden at Matthaei Botanical Gardens.

@Fleur569 just corrected my ID of these berries in a tree mail. She says they're red currants, and I trust her knowledge on this point more than my own. I've asked her to leave her own comment about the differences between the two.

Beautiful banner, but I think these are Red Currants, not Gooseberries.

Wonderful banner Elizabeth! I remember eating lots of these berries when I was very young. Kind of sweet/sour and yummy!

I wrote a tree mail to Arctangent regarding this banner, and she suggested I share it with you.
I wrote:
"Your July 7 banner just came on and I looked at the title and think you are displaying Red Currants, and not gooseberries. I just happen to be growing both of them and am sure that is what you are showing. Gooseberries have definite thorns, do not grow in clusters, as do the red currants. I will dig up the photos of them, if you're interested."

I agree...red currants not gooseberries. My Mom grew both. She made jelly from the currants. About the time I decided I liked the gooseberries she pulled out the bushes...go figure...I wasn't all that fond of the currants

Great banner Elizabeth! Hurray!

Yes, definitely red currants. I grew up with both in my grandfathers garden. I liked the gooseberries best.
Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice!

Elizabeth,

I thought your photograph of the red currants was great! I passed an acorn to you just because I was so impressed! Good job!
