Desert paintbrush

Indian paintbrush, seen just west of Sedona, in desert terrain. I took this from our balloon gondola, near the end of our flight (4/3/08). There are so many kinds of Indian paintbrush, that I'm not sure which this is.

The bloom is beautiful, but the surrounding branches look rather thorny.

I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable about desert vegetation to answer precisely, but it was certainly mixed with something thorny.
