Because all the trees were still fully foliaged the ice accumulated on all the leaves. The weight of the ice caused tree limbs to snap and fall all over Oklahoma City. Clean-up will stretch into spring of 2021.
The area in the opening photograph looked like this the morning of the 27th:
The small patio adjacent to the shade garden looked like this through the season:
And it looked like this the morning of the 27th:
It took about two weeks to clean up all the limbs and get most of the debris out of the flower beds.
That is when we realized how, despite all appearances, the garden had sustained very little serious damage.
Some perennials had been smashed, but they will come up nicely next spring.
None of the three woody shrubs [a dwarf Oakleaf Hydrangea and 2 Exbury Azaleas] had lost any limbs.
No pots were smashed by falling limbs.
The wrought iron bench survived without damage.
The garden was very lucky.
It was horrifying to see early on the morning of the 27th... but the garden is once again prepared for winter & early spring... and the ice storm did not win this time.
Next spring it will be spectacular.
Now if only all the potted plants will work out..............................................
