Your porch picture from June 2017 posting is gorgeous! I love coleus and sweet potato vine. I live in northern VA and am experimenting with SPV. First question is how big are the pots you have those coleus and SPV in on your porch, and how many plants are in each pot?
Secondly, I'd LOVE to have a sprawling mixture like you and others, but starting every year after last frost (after Mother's Day this year!) limits my time to enjoy. I will over winter this year and save money at least, but I was wondering if there is a way to increase the quantity having to treat them as annuals each year? If I divide the potatoes after the winter, then I guess I'd have more to start with. So I could just plant more in an area to try to achieve this look?
I'd love any advice you have!!

Thanks so much!!

Hmmm, looks like you are referring to a member's photo but unsure what photo or where you saw it. Shrug!

Could it be this photo by @scflowers? Although there isn't a date on it like you mentioned so perhaps not.

Hi autif00 , welcome to the site Welcome!

I will try to remember to measure the pots tomorrow, but I think they are in the 18 inch range. I plant 2-3 coleus starts as well as 2-3 vine starts in each pot.

If you collect the potatoes in fall and cut them apart in spring (just as you would for seed potatoes) you will have more than you need.

I recently began putting my potatoes in large black pots and putting them out in full sun in the Daylily seedling bed in spring. As they sprout new vines, I pull the vine off the potato and replant it into my containers with coleus.

Also, the vines respond well to having liquid fertilizer like Miracle Grow or a Milorganite type fertilizer plus plenty of sun.

I have also heard that the vines are easy to winter over in a sunny window. Just make cuttings before frost hits and make sure to keep the water clean until they sprout.

Please let me know if I can help with any other questions. Smiling

Regina
