We were kind of shocked today at the amount of people that came to the store and how many were just looking around. At a time like this I would not be shopping unless I needed to get something. And how many bring their whole family instead of one just getting what they need.

The count is up to 69 in N.J.

Ah, I found an updated article. In Florida, 71 people have tested positive as of early Saturday.

I think it's one way that people can calm and reassure themselves, and keep some sense of normalcy.

And besides, you never know when you might actually find a few rolls of TP! That's a DIY item, isn't it?

How about what they are taking to Mexico? How many of them are infected & don't know it so they will be exposing a lot of Mexicans.

@ShadyGreenThumb your photos only show the surface of the panic setting into the Houston area. I am three hours to the north and we saw people from the Houston area scouring the local stores in search of supplies today. The local stores are limiting quantities to two of each type of item ~ gallons of water, TP, etc. I have been told there is a run on ammunition as well. Folks are scared of what might lie ahead. Crying

I grew up on a farm in MN. With a large family and a house heated with wood, we learned to have enough firewood and food to last thru the winter. I still prepare with a pantry of supplies. I purchase a full year of my medicine so don't worry about hitting the stores when there are hurricanes, flu viruses, etc. I am always concerned that I may not have enough pet food for the duration but will share mine if they'll eat it.

So I don't see the point. Schools have extended spring break and the kids are partying on the beaches, lakes. Young kiddos are on the playgrounds. There is no voluntary quarantining so what is the point. They could as well be back in school.

While some folks are in panic mode, others are cavalier about it. One customer today just returned from a Caribbean cruise with no worries. Two customers were nurses and their perspective is interesting to say the least. They come down on the side of serious, not quite panic yet. When they talk about what they are hearing, I am not too comfortable.

This is a response to a poster on another forum where dudes seem split between apathetic and paranoid:

How many in the U.S. have died?

The Imperial College says their percentage death numbers are meaningless because they have no idea how many people have had the virus, only the worst cases are reported inflating the death percentage number.

If it makes you feel more informed, 46 people have died in my state since New Years Day of the Flu.
You have fallen hook, line and sinker for all the paranoid BS on the tube.
If you want to get rich, invest in toilet paper company. :rotfl:

Paranoia strikes deep, into your life it will creep....

The only really good experiment we have is the cruise ship petri dish. Of 3700 people, 700 were diagnosed positive for the virus, and 7 have died. Now on the one hand they were first world, and reasonably fit, and had excellent hospital care. On the other hand they were elderly, which we know from the Chinese petri dish experiment is not a good thing.

So if we call those two effects a wash, 1% death rate, which is worse than normal flu, but not much, but it seems from China that a lockdown does stop it from spreading. We don't do lockdowns for normal flu, so even though the death rate is lower, the number of deaths from normal flu is higher, because a lot of people get it.
This is all predicated on China telling the truth. Hmm.

The brouhaha for this incident will not end till after the election , regardless of how it goes.
Most of the paranoid babbling in the U.S. is using this as a political weapon.
Sharon is one for whom a case could very well be fatal; chance of getting it are half-way between none and next to none.
She will be doing hair till April 1, the new date for her new knee after she fell and fractured her shoulder , so , all the -- distancing bs, is just that bs for god wannabes and a good way to spread political discourse.

The latest info I've gleaned from (hopefully valid) web sites is in 2020, we have had 20,000 US deaths from flu and 3,000 from coronavirus. Is it because the flu hits every year, and this new virus is new and therefore somehow scarier? I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the panic.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

The Australian Prime Minister has now declared that anyone entering the country from midnight tonight must go into a mandatory 14 day quarantine period upon arrival. That is for everyone. No cruise ship passengers or crew will be allowed to disembark either. Today in Tasmania our Premier closed ports to cruise ships except for one that had already told its passengers that if they got off they would not be allowed back on and that they would be in quarantine for 2 weeks in Tasmania if they disembarked. One person decided to leave so he is here for a fortnight before going to stay with friends in the country. I can only assume when the passengers reach their destination port they will be required to go into quarantine there as well. Think of the many people who flew from their home country to hop on a ship in another country, then cruising, then disembarking in a third country, then flying back to their home country. That would be at least a month of quarantine.

This is not the flu, the flu has a Ro rate of 1.3 the Covid 19 is 2-3.0, . The seasonal flu has a mitigation strategy, a vaccine, the h1n1 used Tamiflu. Ignore at your own peril, the problem is when the hospital beds are taken up with this disease and you come in with your everyday heart attack or stroke good luck. Disease is not political.
