You are standing on an expansive ground floor plaza surrounding a 36 story office tower. You are looking down into what can only be described as a "light well"... a twenty foot square opening in the plaza that allows light into basement offices surrounding the light well via floor to ceiling glass walls. A semi-mature Yaupon Holly was the only plant in this space when the project began. The white sculpture is composed of one foot high, one foot wide sections of metal plate that were assembled and welded together in place. The sculpture represents the fifty third hexagram in The I Ching or Book of Changes... Chien / Development (Gradual Progress). The sculpture was originally unfinished... with a rusted brown surface. But at some point the owners decided to paint it white. The longest straight section of the sculpture is approximately 23 feet long... effectively dividing the square space into two areas. One side was planted with Liriope... the other was covered with a "mulch" of somewhat large irregular brown stones. Three Japanese Maples and a Dwarf Burning Bush are the only other plants in the space.
