From the Correspondence section of The Garden, February 15, 1913:
Iris Vartanii and its White Variety.—We were interested to see figured in your February 8 issue, page 69, the fine pan of Iris Vartanii, and should like to draw attention to the very little known white variety of it which goes under the name of Pearl of Jerusalem or White Pearl. We introduced it a few years back as a variety of Histrio, but it showed itself to be Vartanii as soon as it flowered. Another point worth mentioning with regard to the species is its delightful fragrance, which Sir Michael Foster seems to have overlooked in his invaluable little book on bulbous Irises. It strongly reminds one of Almonds.—R. Wallace and Co.
Bulletin of the American Iris Society, October 1943, p.11:
"Some Rare Native Iris" by Minnie Colquitt
CAROLINE DORMAN, a hybrid occurring in the garden of Mrs. Ruth Dorman. A fine new shade in native iris, with excellent size and form. "Bishop's violet", both sepals and petals flushed fujiyama toward the base.
I talked with Mrs. Nicholson, the hybridizer of 'Bluzzy Fluzzy', today and she said she had named this iris because of the blue tip on the beard and the slight blueish cast the falls have. The 'u' in each word has the sound as in 'blue'. Therefore, the name is said like this: Bluezzy Fluezzy not with a short u 'uh' sound of Bluhzzy Fluhzzy.
I think this iris is underated. It produces lots of huge, golden yellow blooms, has phenomenal growth and a wonderful scent. It's like a big, bright ray of sunshine!
From Milliken Gardens catalog, 1940: For the past two seasons, visitors have consistently selected this seedling as the finest yellow in our garden. It is deeper and brighter than either Lady Paramount or Happy Days and is also larger and taller. The outstanding characteristic that sets this iris apart from other yellows, however, is the fact that both standards and falls are beautifully frilled and wavy. This quality must be seen to be fully appreciated. King's Ransom is a midseason bloomer, an extremely vigorous grower, and should be perfectly hardy in the severe climates. Height 4 feet. $15 .00.
