Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Red Beefsteak')
Proposal: comment_edit
Status: Approved

Propid: 384353

Approved by: Calif_Sue

Dec 24, 2021 9:31 AM Body: Out grew the cage and so many large tomatoes the branches are breaking, had to prune some to save the branches. Largest picked so far 1 pound 6 ounces, picking daily 3-5 large tomatoes in August, one out of every 4 over a pound. Very nice looking, firm, keeping well on the counter, but lacking in taste. I would rate taste average, better than store tomatoes but not up to fresh garden taste.

Dec 24, 2021 9:29 AM Body: I grew this pepper for the first time this year and was very pleased with the vigor, flavor and number of peppers it produced. It has earned a place in my future gardens. It does get rather large and needs staking or the peppers pull the plant over.

Pepper and Salt (Erigenia bulbosa)
Proposal: comment_edit
Status: Approved

Propid: 384351

Approved by: Calif_Sue

Dec 24, 2021 9:29 AM Body: This early little flower is often missed, also called pepper and salt because of the flower appearance. This plant is the the only species in the genus Erigenia. In the carrot family. A spring ephemeral native to the north eastern North-America. One of the earliest flowers in the woods here in central Indiana.

Melon (Cucumis melo 'Ogen')
Proposal: comment_edit
Status: Approved

Propid: 384350

Dec 24, 2021 9:29 AM Body: I grew this melon on a trellis this year and have been very pleased. It is the juiciest melon I have ever eaten. After removing the seeds there is half a cup of juice in the cavity. Hard to describe the taste but very flavorful when fully ripe. Worth the space in my small garden. It earned a thumbs up.

Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia)
Proposal: comment_edit
Status: Approved

Propid: 384349

Approved by: Calif_Sue

Dec 24, 2021 9:27 AM Body: Locust trees including the black locust make an excellent fence post and in the past were encouraged to be planted as an income source. The wood is fast growing, nitrogen fixing, and very naturally rot resistant. Reported to give 20-25 years as outdoor posts for burning. It has a high BTU and the spring blossoms smell great and are loved by bees.

Lance-leaf Buckthorn (Rhamnus lanceolata)
Proposal: comment_edit
Status: Approved

Dec 23, 2021 5:31 PM Body: This shrub is not common in most of its range, though it is in some local areas. Its native range is from eastern South Dakota through much of Wisconsin, some of Illinois into Pennsylvania down to Alabama to eastern Texas that grows on open wooded slopes & cliffs and also in bottomland woods. Its heaviest concentration is in most of Missouri. It does have shiny lance-shaped leaves of about 2 to 6 inches long. The slender red-brown twigs become gray with age, and the pith is solid, white, and spongy. It bears imperfect greenish-yellow tiny flowers with four petals. The staminate (male) flowers have longer petals of 1.0 to 1.2 mm long while pistillate (female) petals are 0.5 to 0.9 mm long. Flowers are crowded along the young shoots. The fruit is a black drupe (berry-like but built like a peach fruit) with two seeds inside, and the fruit is toxic to humans. Like the other few species of North American buckthorns, this does not have any sharp spurs to poke someone.

Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Jungle Shadows')
Proposal: comment_edit
Status: Approved

Dec 4, 2020 1:38 PM Body: Here is an interesting comment made by Kevin Vaughn:
Peter, Interesting that 'Killer' is behaving the same in Germany. The 'Killer' X self seedlings show these striking changes but interestingly the 'Jungle Shadows' X 'Killer' seedlings seem to be year round very intense, almost as though it captured one one of the phases of 'Killer', but these seedlings don't change much. In some of the other crosses with 'Killer' the changeable colors show in some of the seedlings but others also capture one of the phases of 'Killer' but in a more permanent state. When 'Jungle Shadows' first appeared as a seedling I was amazed at how well the color held up. In those days it was one of the few that did have color all year. Most turned green. I remember my call from Helen Payne after she received that plant "We can sell LOTS of that one Kevin". Amazingly, 45 years later they still are selling it! In the seedlings from self pollinating 'Jungle Shadows' there have been a majority of seedlings that keep color year round. Kevin
