[ White Torch Cactus (Soehrensia spachiana) | Posted on May 17, 2016 ]

This recently bloomed for me for the first time. It's been in the ground for approximately 13 years, planted under a pergola covered with shadecloth. The bud took over a week to form, and ended up being about 7 inches long! It opened during the night, closed the next day, and then re-opened for the second night and has been open all day today. I can't believe how impressive this is. The flower measures 8 inches across! It was worth the long wait.

[ Autumn Sage (Salvia greggii) | Posted on April 9, 2016 ]

I'm very pleased with my Salvia greggii! It has grown well and blooms nearly full time from spring through fall. The deer and rabbits are avoiding it, which is wonderful. I live in an area where most plants get eaten by the critters. It does seem to need a bit more water than some of my other plants, but I don't mind because the flowers are so bright and beautiful.

[ Dusty Miller (Jacobaea maritima 'Silver Dust') | Posted on March 17, 2016 ]

In our rural New Mexico landscape, this is one of the only plants that deer and rabbits won't eat. It grows very quickly, rooting down wherever it touches the soil. It looks good year round. I help it spread by cutting off tiny pieces and burying it in the soil. They seem to take root within a week if they're kept moist during that time.

Occasionally a hard freeze will hit it, but I can just cut the damaged areas off and the rest of the plant keeps on looking beautiful. It does flower, but the flowers are fairly inconspicuous and slightly messy looking, and so I normally just cut off the flowerheads when they appear.

It would be a great plant for a Moon Garden. It just shines out so well by moonlight.

[ Pink Sand Verbena (Abronia villosa) | Posted on February 9, 2016 ]

This plant is considered a weed by most people in our area. I love it, and often will transplant them to better spots around our place. They transplant easily and keep on blooming for months. It's such a wonderful bit of color and doesn't require much water at all. Our landscape is overrun with deer, rabbits and Javelinas, but they don't look twice at these little flowers.

[ Mirror Bush (Coprosma repens 'Lemon and Lime') | Posted on February 8, 2016 ]

This is a very vibrant evergreen with brightly variegated green and yellow leaves. The leaves get tinged with pink as the nights grow cooler.
