[ Stonecrop (Hylotelephium spectabile 'Jaws') | Posted on September 18, 2011 ]

Originating in Tennessee, this sport of the popular variety ‘Autumn Joy’ forms a bushy mound of succulent blue-green, the edges deeply-cut, cupped and curled leaves. Large heads of dusty salmon-rose flowers appear in late summer, later developing into brown seed heads with good winter interest. A magnet for butterflies. Best used towards the front of a sunny border or in mixed containers, where the unusual effect of the foliage may be best appreciated.

[ Sage (Salvia nemorosa 'Mainacht') | Posted on September 16, 2011 ]

Selected as the 1997 Perennial Plant of the Year. Outstanding for its compact growth habit, profuse deep purple flower spikes and vigorous re-blooming nature. “May Night” thrives in hot, sunny planting sites. The first flush of flowers comes in late spring. Deadheading and a little extra watering assures heavy re-blooming.

[ Mangave (Agave 'Macho Mocha') | Posted on September 15, 2011 ]

I am successfully growing 'Macho Mocha' here in zone 7a with adequate winter protection.

Pups and the parent plant can display different coloration. The amount of direct sunlight will also affect color.

[ Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) | Posted on September 14, 2011 ]

Plant is poisonous if consumed in large quantities but safe as a flavoring.

[ Cockscomb (Celosia argentea) | Posted on September 12, 2011 ]

Prefers drier growing conditions. Will last approximately 10-14 days as a cut flower.

[ Tennessee Coneflower (Echinacea tennesseensis) | Posted on September 11, 2011 ]

A rare coneflower, Echinacea tennesseensis was removed from the Endangered Species List in 2011.

[ Rhipsalis elliptica | Posted on September 10, 2011 ]

Rhipsalis should be rested for 6-8 weeks each fall; keep the soil just barely moist. Propagation can be done by cuttings or, when available, by seed.

[ Medusa's Head (Euphorbia flanaganii) | Posted on September 10, 2011 ]

Don't be afraid to attempt to rehabilitate a Medusa's Head even when it looks bad. Many times the plants have been over-watered and can be salvaged with a little TLC. Always check for root mealies by removing the plant from the pot. Replace the old soil with fresh soil.

[ Air Plant (Tillandsia xerographica) | Posted on September 9, 2011 ]

Water T. xerographica less often than other air plants. Turn upside down to drain trapped water.

[ Black Rose (Aeonium arboreum 'Zwartkop') | Posted on September 9, 2011 ]

This plant can become a large spreading bush with multiple branches. May reach heights of 4 ft. under ideal conditions.
